DeSo Surpasses 67.5 Million Transactions

May 17, 2022

Recent events have created buzz around centralized vs. decentralized social media – specifically around who, if anyone, should control what content can be shared on various platforms.  Social blockchain DeSo, designed to scale decentralized social media applications to 1 billion-plus users, has taken the perspective that control over media should not be centralized. Recently, it surpassed 67.5 million transactions on its network since its inception 433 days ago.

The transaction milestone – a feat that took Ethereum around 800 days to accomplish – proved that DeSo’s network is equipped to scale and compete with the leading social apps at a time when more and more people are calling for new social media infrastructure in the face of censorship and de-platforming by big tech.

Censorship and de-platforming by big tech recently appeared when Bankless and three other leading web3-focused media entities were terminated from YouTube during the May 8 weekend. For Bankless, 10,000-plus hours of content and 150,000 subscribers were gone with no explanation. Bankless eventually was reinstated.

"When you decentralize something, you unlock the ingenuity of everybody all over the world rather than a small group of people running a top-down, centralized organization,” said Nader Al-Naji, DeSo founder. "If you look at social media today, it's more centralized than the financial system was before Bitcoin. You have five companies that virtually control everything we see and do online."

The DeSo blockchain includes web3 versions of Twitter and LinkedIn. The blockchain will bring new social innovation to decentralized autonomous organizations, or DAOs, with the coming launch of DAODAO. DeSo also recently pushed its upgrade Hypersync live, which reduces blockchain sync time to 20 minutes.
