Mayor Adams Makes Case for Crypto Education In NYC Schools

November 09, 2021

According to a recent article by CryptoPotato, NYC’s new Mayor Eric Adams believes blockchain and cryptocurrency education should become part of the education program in public schools throughout the city, and intends to make this a reality

Since taking office, Adams has been quite vocal about his support for cryptocurrencies, going so far as to ask for his first three paychecks to be issued in Bitcoin. The Mayor firmly believes that this new form of currency is the future of global commerce, and feels students within the city should become knowledgeable on the subject.

Speaking with CNN, Adams stated “We must open our schools to teach the technology, to teach this new way of thinking when it comes down to paying for goods and services.”

Adams also makes the case that NYC holds a reputation as an innovation leader, and could use cryptocurrency as a way to revitalize the city as a hub for technological progress. The Mayor is currently initiating plans to allow businesses to accept cryptocurrencies as a payment option.

Although Mayor Adams has received praise for his enthusiasm towards blockchain and crypto, he has drawn criticism from industry experts who are less favorable of the technology. Others feel Adam’s request for payment in bitcoin is unnecessary, as the Mayor could simply convert his salary into crypto personally if he so chooses.

It is still too early to tell if Mayor Adams will be successful in his attempt to add this new education program to the NYC school system. However, the mere fact that this idea is being openly discussed by elected officials shows that blockchain and digital currency have clearly secured a place in the future of commerce.
