Etisalat Digital and Smartworld Announce Partnership for Tamper-Proof Digital Certificates

September 21, 2020

As more of the world plays, works and learns online, the topic of security on business and educational platforms becomes even more critical. While the world rushed to use Zoom for video conferencing, it quickly learned that the platform can be hacked relatively easily, and invaded by Internet trolls. As a result, security for online education platforms is a hot topic.

Etisalat Digital, the digital arm of United Arab Emirates (UAE) telecommunications firm Etisalat, recently announced a new partnership with Smartworld to exclusively bring Shahada, a tamper-proof digital certificate platform, to all educational institutions in the region. The partnership is expected to result in a solution that will save time, effort and resources by enabling institutions to securely issue credentials on blockchain, avoiding forgery of paper-based certificates and creating an educational passport where credentials are easily shared with third parties, who can verify their authenticity seamlessly.

Shahada is a collaboration between Smartworld, the UAE’s leading systems integrator, and Grape Technology, a UAE software technology startup with expertise in blockchain implementations across financial, educational and government sectors. The collaboration was first announced in February of this year. The goal of the partnership is to embrace UAE leadership’s vision of becoming the world’s first country powered with blockchain technology, and contribute by providing best in class next-gen blockchain solutions for the public/private education sector.

“We are pleased to partner with Smartworld to bring Shahada, a secure platform that is a groundbreaking innovation for the educational sector,” said Abdulla Ebrahim Al Ahmed, Senior Vice President of Government Sales for Etisalat in a statement. “Etisalat Digital with its capabilities and expertise, utilizes disruptive technologies to empower all sectors in UAE and the Middle East. Shahada reinforces our capabilities in blockchain after launching a nationwide platform in collaboration with eight major banks to digitize trade in the finance sector.”

Abdulqader Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Smartworld, noted that the companies expect to gain synergies in the partnership.

“Our ecosystem solution will not only help students, government and educational institutions, but also employers who will experience ease of verification and a reduction of fraud,” he said.
