Google CEO Offers Insights Into Blockchain Strategy

February 08, 2022

When it comes to digital technology, there’s few areas where Google isn’t involved. Google is notable in many areas, starting with its search engine, and expanding into a wide number of fields including cloud computing, communications, analytics, gaming, security, and beyond. Considering how many diverse tech areas Google has hands in, it was only a matter of time before the company turned interest toward blockchain.

According to a recent article from Bitcoin.com, Google/Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently provided some details into Google's blockchain and web3 business strategies during the company’s Q4 earnings call. Pichai revealed Google’s cloud division formed a group to create business around blockchain-based applications, and contemplating potential products and services Google may be able to provide to blockchain developers.

“As a company, we are looking at how we might contribute to the ecosystem and add value. So we’ll definitely be watching the space closely and supporting it where we can,” Pichai said during the call.

“Overall, I think technology will continue to evolve and innovate and we want to be pro-innovation and approach it that way.”

Although Google executives have been somewhat vague in their blockchain development plans, it’s not out of the realm of possibility the company started researching the technology long before this announcement-and that may be a good thing. Keeping in mind the resources, expertise, and general influence Google has on a global scale, the company could play a major part in accelerating blockchain and decentralized tech further into the mainstream.

Tech experts and enthusiasts seem to agree the technology has immense potential outside of crypto finance, and Google seems like the ideal tech company to investigate its usage outside of crypto finance. However, startups within the blockchain space should take notice, as Google’s future product/service portfolio may compromise the field’s head start.
